Students commonly want to know what part of the college application “carries the most weight.” The truth is, there are many parts to your application, and together they help us discover and appreciate your particular mix of qualities. Academic criteria are important to Yale’s selective admissions process, but we look at far more than test scores and grades.

Interviews provide the opportunity to share additional information with the Admissions Committee. All Yale interviews, both those with alumni and those with current Yale seniors, are evaluative. Admissions officers read interview reports alongside application materials.

Embark on your Common App college application journey with a seasoned Yale Coach as your trusted navigator – guided by the expertise of current Yale students who have successfully conquered the application process.
Get acquainted with the student Pivot admission interview, a crucial step in the application process where applicants showcase their unique qualities and aspirations.
Through this interview, students have the opportunity to express their passions and motivations, providing a holistic view of their potential as future leaders.
Mock interview and feedback
Participate in a mock interview conducted by a Yale student or alumni to simulate real-life interview scenarios.
The Pivot team will provide feedback on your mock interview and collaborate with you to develop strategies for enhancing your interview skills.
In-depth year-end review and future recommendations
Prior to our March graduation, your Capstone instructor, Yale buddy, and Pivot Coach will collaborate to have a comprehensive discussion about your contributions and achievements throughout the year, providing recommendations for your future direction.

Pivot students and Yale undergraduates. By facilitating meaningful interactions and mentorship,
the program enhances personal growth and academic success for both groups.

Pair with your buddy
Following the summer program, each student will be paired with a Yale undergraduate "Buddy" based on their academic and extracurricular backgrounds.
You can also request to be matched with an academic instructor as your Yale Buddy if you believe they best align with your interests.
Timeline
From October to February, your Yale Buddy will meet with you at least once per month to address any challenges you may encounter. Together, you will embark on an exciting Pivot journey!

Madison
B.S. in Physics and a B.A. in East Asian Studies
Originally from Michigan, Madison Butchko is a rising senior at Yale University, pursuing a B.S. in Physics and a B.A. in East Asian Studies. Her academic journey reflects her passion for the intersection of science and the humanities. Madison has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as President of both the Yale Society of Physics Students and Her Campus, where she bridges her diverse interests and fosters inclusive communities. Throughout her time at Yale, she has been actively involved in research, particularly through National Science Foundation-funded summer REU programs, where she worked on projects in computational biophysics.
Madison values service and giving back to the community. Her dedication to education is evident in her role as an AP Physics Teaching Assistant through the Global Teaching Project, where she develops lesson plans and engages students in complex physics concepts. Additionally, Madison has served as a cadet in Air Force ROTC for four years, honing her leadership skills and developing a strong sense of discipline and service. Overall, Madison aims to catalyze positive change in her community and the lives of those around her.

Isaac
Major in East Asian Studies
Born and raised in Albany, New York, Isaac Young graduated from Yale College in 2020 with a B.A. in East Asian Studies. After graduating, Isaac joined the Yale-China Fellowship and taught tenth-grade English for three years at Yali High School in Changsha, Hunan, China. Isaac now lives in Toronto and is a prospective J.D. student at the University of British Columbia’s Peter A. Allard School of Law, where he plans to attend this Fall. Inspired by his time in China, Isaac intends to study Chinese/international law and is dedicated to improving Sino-American relations from the ground up. As a member of the ACES-Pivot team, he is excited to help Chinese students learn more about America, about the Western Education system, and about themselves.
When he was in high school, Isaac applied to 21 undergraduate programs and was accepted to 17, including Yale, Columbia, McGill, University of Toronto, Amherst, and Williams. He is more than happy to advise ACES-Pivot students about their own Common App essays. In his free time, Isaac loves to watch sports, produce and listen to music, and exercise. If you see him on campus, feel free to say hi and/or pick his brain about any questions you might have.

Yixuan
Coach of the Yale Debate Association, JD in Yale Law School
In college, Yixuan was the High School Curriculum Director of the Charlottesville Debate League, and wrote curriculum for high school speech and debate programs in Charlottesville. She also coached one high school debate team, two middle school debate teams, and one college debate team.
In law school, Yixuan was the coach of the Yale Debate Association. As a debate coach, she has given lectures and feedback sessions on research skills, understandings of domestic and international policy, and public speaking skills. In her summer internship in 2022, she designed curriculum for and ran a mock trial camp for middle schoolers. She have also mentored dozens of current and potential law students on law school applications, LSAT, job applications, and academics.
